The barbary ground squirrel is endemic to Western Sahara, Algeria and Morocco and has been introduced into the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura island too. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, temperate grassland and rocky areas where it lives colonially in burrows.
